Design of book & correspondence material - U Beauty : black sheep designers re-introduce Australia features interviews from 20 Australian designers across different disciplines & asks them to reflect on how Australia's image is represented in & through design. What follows is a commentary on Australia's image projection and entanglement with the cliched versus embracing a truer reflection of the subtleties of modern Australia. "Intelligent and curious design is a wonderful thing in itself, irrespective of the culture that produces it. But, it's even better if it can refer to culture without turning it into a stereotype. For Australians this is hard... but achievable" Stephen Banham (designer & one of the interviewees from U Beauty). "Australianising" is a term used to describe the expected use of stereotypical imagery en mass that continues the myth and negates progression. Re-introducing "Australian" as not just this habitual view is to push for breaking out of the cycle of how we are represented & what we deem "Australian". The black sheep designers give their insight into the path that can be taken, distancing us from reverting to "flock" mentality and inspiring us with fresh views of creative home-grown talent. Design consists of a 10" x 10" book in slip cover, french fold pages, internal envelope containing postcards & postage stamp set. Finalist Winner: AGDA Student Awards - called for entries across 5 categories in Identity, Print, Digital, 3D & Craft. 500 entries were received from design students & recent graduates nationally. There were 52 Finalist Winners & 5 Distinction Winners. http://archive.agda.com.au/recognition/agdaawards/2006/Inaugu.html
