Flatland: Romancing Dimensions...

Book & Poster series - This project approached literature visually, learning from the language of notation systems and visual configurations of information. By analyzing text firstly as a mapping exercise, written language was translated into visual language 'points' and therefore into a graphic notation system. Composing a graphic language specific to the text one may 'read' the narrative as visual experience.

The work takes inspiration from the 1884 novel Flatland; A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott. First published under the pseudonym 'A. Square' Flatland has maintained a scientific following for over a century, and has seen translations of the text in over 15 languages (as well as various English & American editions). The story revolves around geometric characters living on a 2D plane likened to a sheet of paper. All they are aware of is their 2D world, until one Square experiences a visit from a Sphere from the 3rd Dimension opening his eyes to 0D, 1D, 2D the 3D and the possibilities beyond...

Embarking on a visual literacy, rather than being languaged based, opens us up to the alternate ways we take in information that is presented to us. Here in image 2 below, the grid structure was constructed around the variables of X, Y and Z (3rd Dimension of space). It's linear form took influence from the reading of a music staff, so the navigational device was dubbed the 'Axis Stave'. As with a music score this Axis Stave provides a left to right navigational sequence about which notational elements move upon, and within, the story's score.

Set includes 2 x books in an origami fold box, book belly bands, sectional pages unhinge to form large foldout map (taking the intimate space of the book into an expanse of paper), 2 x 3D posters (paper folds on areas of X,Y&Z), 1 x symbol constellation poster (plotted notations from the two books confined to one sheet).
